Preserve to Protect – a new awareness drive on antimicrobial resistance from the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC)
The Trinity Challenge has partnered with the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to raise awareness about antimicrobial resistance and particularly the serious threat it poses to people living with cancer.
There has been substantial progress in cancer care in the past decades, with key advances in surgery, radiotherapy, and medicines including immunotherapies. But the increasing inability of medicines to address certain infections can undermine efforts to treat cancer patients.
Infections are one of the most frequent complications in cancer treatments, with patients being three times more likely to die from a fatal infection compared to those without cancer[1].
So it is clear that antibiotics and antifungals are an essential part of cancer treatment – many patients simply must take them. For their benefit it is important to better manage the use of these medicines and put in place key actions that can limit antimicrobial resistance.
Alongside the Ineos Oxford Institute for antimicrobial resistance, the Trinity Challenge is proud to have supported this new multi-channel awareness drive from the Union for International Cancer Control. New materials have been developed to highlight the need for action in order to conserve cancer treatment and care; that we need to preserve the power of antibiotics in order to protect patients and our ability to treat cancer.
